Mechanical Chain Base

Image
I got this mechanical chain base more than a year ago but only got around to painting it about the middle of the year. I love the idea of having a hangar for my 1/144s because it serves as a nice backdrop for a photo shoot and it somewhat fills in this craving of mine to make an actual diorama with my kits. I primed this with Bosny Primer Gray, it cost Php90.00  or around $2 here in the Philippines and it's been my primer of choice for more than 3 years and it works really really well with both hand-brushing and spray painting. I weathered this one using cheap artist's oil paints and added the panel lines using a Gundam marker. The decals I got from a Bandai Decal Sheet that a friend gave me. Weathering didn't make much time as I just aimed to add color variations and to just make the whole thing grimy. I love this small truck think, its very basic but adds a nice focal point to the base. And here it is with my 1/144 Gaia that I f...

Tools: Acrylic Putty

When you start seriously building model kits you will want to eliminate the seams or gaps between parts and to do this you will need a filler. One of the most commonly used filler by modelers is Tamiya Putty (see image below) This costs around Php180.00 here in the Philippines (roughly $4.50) so considering what it can do it is not that expensive. My main beef with this product however is that it dries too fast and the tube gets easily clogged making it really hard to get the product out of the tube. The solution: Acrylic Putty This is available here in the Philippines where automotive paint supplies are sold and a pint costs around the same price as Tamiya Basic Type Putty. It smells almost the same as Tamiya's so I am assuming that they are made from the same basic chemicals. From what I have observed, here are some of the advantages of Acrylic Putty over Tamiya's: It is easier to source since there are a lot of Auto Paint Supplies here in Manila It is eas...

1/144 Gundam Ashtron

Image
The 1/144 Gundam Ashtron from Bandai is an old kit and it shows its age. It is not very articulate, still uses the old PC set from the Non-Grade Gundam Wing line and has those horrible rubber hands. Nevertheless, this is the first kit that I have really wanted to buy for myself way back when I was in college. I had a blast working on this kit. There are days when I miss the few parts count on the pre-HGUCs because I really do not care for molding separately the colored parts. While I do agree that they make the kits easier to build and color, sometimes I feel that doing so needlessly bumps up the price of the kit. But I know that Bandai is making the kits more enjoyable for modelers who prefer their kits snap-built so it's ok. I opted to customize the arms that attach the pincers. Those that come with the kit are too flimsy and don't really do much in terms of posing. I used some brass wires and plastic ties and just painted everything flat black. The kit, by the way, is ...
