1/144 Gaia Gundam Part II

Here's part II of the Gaia shoot. At this stage I am beginning to consider getting myself a new camera, or better lighting gear. I'm still using my trusty Canon Powershot A1100, a 5 year old point and shoot, and a soft box that I place near a window in my studio. I do not have good lighting but I find that sunlight is enough for my needs, the only downside being that I cannot shoot at night.

Well, for obvious reasons, a DSLR would give me better photos. A decent lighting set-up, as opposed to two desk lamps that I used in my other shoots, would help me get better photos at night even with my current camera. But sadly, that's not very high on my current priority list... in fact I've been getting rid of some of my gadgets because I haven't been able to use them and a new cam would mean another gadget that I don't think I'd be able to maximize. But one thing's for sure, if my current one breaks I'd really get myself a DSLR.

If you look really really closely you will notice that this isn't a clean build. There are specs of paint and an odd seam line or two scattered on the kit. A few years ago I would have obsessed over these things. I would resand and repaint an almost finished kit just because of a seam line. But not anymore... I don't build competitively and my goal right now is to build as much as I can and to lower my kit backlog.

When I buy a kit I usually have something in mind for it. I get disappointed when I see some of my old kits in storage and I remember how fun it was when I purchased them because I was thinking of a cool modification or paint scheme to use on that particular kit that I wasn't able to do so because of my schedule.

My current life design allows me to work on my kits on a regular basis, and I'm really really thankful for that. For most people this would seem to be a petty reason to risk job security and go freelance. Of course, model kit building isn't my primary reason for living the way I do right now but I admit that that it is one of the many major reasons. When you do digital art for a living you sometimes want to go and do something with your hands. For me that's building and painting stuff up. Life is too short to not be able to do the things that you love. I'm thankful to the Lord because I get to draw and build kits on an almost daily basis.

That being said, I guess it all boils down to knowing what you want and knowing what you have to do to get it. I've met so many people whose passions have died out and I don't want to be like them. I put in high regard all the adults who still collect toys, stickers, stamps or whatever just for fun. There is no need for conformity when it comes to definitions of growing up so long as your basics are covered, meaning, you're responsible for all the stuff that adults should be responsible for.

I grew up with a shop beside our house. We built fiberglass boats and car accessories and anything that can be built with fiberglass. I spent summers working there and I learned a lot of my kit building skills from our shop.

So there guys, hope you enjoyed my Gaia along with some random musings that I have about life. I am currently building a 1/144 Zaku Amazing and will be posting build updates on my next entry. God bless!
