Optimus Primal

 

Warning: Massive photo dump




TLDR: Get this figure. I know that for a Voyager class toy this one is on the small side but he is hefty, the plastic is so much better than past TF toys I've had, and the details are amazing. 


Box art is amazing. I'm loving how they've decided to show more of the packaging illustration on the box. This is, of course, because of Hasbro's efforts to minimize the use of plastic in their packaging, as such a smaller window and a bigger space for the art. I wish I was able to draw some packaging art for this line hehe.











So I do not have a proper photo shoot area at the moment but hey, I'm really digging how fun it is to use my monitor and Ipad as a backdrop.





Bot mode is where this figure really shines. It's a modern take on the old Beast Wars toy: better proportions, articulation and detail.




This massive chest gap is one of the few things that I do not like about this figure. Its there and its huge.





Articulated hands! Plus its got wrist rotation so its a win!




Not as gimmicky as the old Beast Wars figure but at least he's got the arm blasters.
















There's a lot of robot kibble visible but its ok, the bot mode more than makes up for that.







I wish there was a better way to hide the kibble behind the legs as well as those on the feet but for a mass retail release I think this one's really great.








Weapon storage on this guy makes him look more intimidating.



Another gripe I have with this figure is that the feet on the gorilla mode when he is standing up looks really weird at the knees. It's a design compromise and not really visible at first glance so I guess its ok. 


I'd really be afraid of a dual sword wielding gorilla.


All in all I'd say that this is one of my best TF figures. I haven't been actively buying TF since last year because I felt that the price increase in TF figures here in the Philippines is just too much. That being said, I also promised myself that I'd get the Beast Wars toys even if I had to pay retail for them (something that I seldom do) and I am very pleased with Optimus Primal and I think he's worth the cost. I'm also thankful to my wife for giving this to me as well as Dinobot (yay!) and I'm really contemplating getting back into buying TFs again.

Well, I just got Cheetor earlier this afternoon so well...

The MG Shenlong is my 3rd MG build and I am beginning to really appreciate this line of kits. I am primarily a 1/144 scale builder because I like how compact the kits are and somehow, at the back of my mind, whenever I am working on something that's taller than 8 inches, I feel like I am working on a toy.  Specifically a doll is what I see in my hands, instead of a model kit. The size just bugs me... it feels really really big. However, having painted the MG Strike Noir and the MG Deathschyte, I feel like the MG's are growing on me and for obvious reasons. Mechanical Chain Base

I got this mechanical chain base more than a year ago but only got around to painting it about the middle of the year. I love the idea of having a hangar for my 1/144s because it serves as a nice backdrop for a photo shoot and it somewhat fills in this craving of mine to make an actual diorama with my kits. I primed this with Bosny Primer Gray, it cost Php90.00  or around $2 here in the Philippines and it's been my primer of choice for more than 3 years and it works really really well with both hand-brushing and spray painting. I weathered this one using cheap artist's oil paints and added the panel lines using a Gundam marker. The decals I got from a Bandai Decal Sheet that a friend gave me. Weathering didn't make much time as I just aimed to add color variations and to just make the whole thing grimy. I love this small truck think, its very basic but adds a nice focal point to the base. Gunpla Tutorial: Surface Preparation and Taking Care of Seams and Nub Marks

Here is the second part of my tutorial on how I build my Gunpla. Before we go any further, I'd like to apologize because I was not able to take as much photos as I needed to make what I wanted to show you guys as clear as possible. Noob mistake, I'll do better next time :) Here we see a sample of the snap fit for the kit. Before I go about finishing up the kit I make sure that I do a complete build first to determine the areas that I need to fix and the areas that will not be seen. I do not work on hidden areas because I think that's wasted time and effort and instead I concentrate on the surfaces that will be seen. You may notice from this build of the torso that there are a lot of nub marks. That's ok, we really do not need to be clean here, we just have to check if the kit builds well.
