Tools: Acrylic Putty

Image
When you start seriously building model kits you will want to eliminate the seams or gaps between parts and to do this you will need a filler. One of the most commonly used filler by modelers is Tamiya Putty (see image below) This costs around Php180.00 here in the Philippines (roughly $4.50) so considering what it can do it is not that expensive. My main beef with this product however is that it dries too fast and the tube gets easily clogged making it really hard to get the product out of the tube. The solution: Acrylic Putty This is available here in the Philippines where automotive paint supplies are sold and a pint costs around the same price as Tamiya Basic Type Putty. It smells almost the same as Tamiya's so I am assuming that they are made from the same basic chemicals. From what I have observed, here are some of the advantages of Acrylic Putty over Tamiya's: It is easier to source since there are a lot of Auto Paint Supplies here in Manila It is eas...

1/144 Gundam Ashtron

The 1/144 Gundam Ashtron from Bandai is an old kit and it shows its age. It is not very articulate, still uses the old PC set from the Non-Grade Gundam Wing line and has those horrible rubber hands. Nevertheless, this is the first kit that I have really wanted to buy for myself way back when I was in college. I had a blast working on this kit. There are days when I miss the few parts count on the pre-HGUCs because I really do not care for molding separately the colored parts. While I do agree that they make the kits easier to build and color, sometimes I feel that doing so needlessly bumps up the price of the kit. But I know that Bandai is making the kits more enjoyable for modelers who prefer their kits snap-built so it's ok. I opted to customize the arms that attach the pincers. Those that come with the kit are too flimsy and don't really do much in terms of posing. I used some brass wires and plastic ties and just painted everything flat black. The kit, by the way, is ...

1/144 Turn X I started this blog with the goal of sharing my methods of kit building. I've been engrossed with model kits since 2002 and over the years I have amassed for myself a sizable amount of unbuilt and unpainted kits. I realized that my main reasons for having this huge unfinished pile was because for me then this hobby has become both time consuming and expensive especially if you've been using branded hobby supplies like Tamiya Hobby Paints or the official modelling supplies from Bandai. Don't get me wrong, I've tried these products and I can say that they really do get the job done but the price, at least for me, became a huge barrier. Also, if you live in the Philippines, these supplies can only be bought at the very few hobby shops that we have and being a freelancer I have found it impractical for me to travel just to get my model kit supplies. Because of these reasons, and just because I'm a big cheapskate myself, I resolved to go about and work o...
