Tools: Acrylic Putty

When you start seriously building model kits you will want to eliminate the seams or gaps between parts and to do this you will need a filler. One of the most commonly used filler by modelers is Tamiya Putty (see image below)

This costs around Php180.00 here in the Philippines (roughly $4.50) so considering what it can do it is not that expensive. My main beef with this product however is that it dries too fast and the tube gets easily clogged making it really hard to get the product out of the tube.

The solution: Acrylic Putty

This is available here in the Philippines where automotive paint supplies are sold and a pint costs around the same price as Tamiya Basic Type Putty. It smells almost the same as Tamiya's so I am assuming that they are made from the same basic chemicals. From what I have observed, here are some of the advantages of Acrylic Putty over Tamiya's:

  • It is easier to source since there are a lot of Auto Paint Supplies here in Manila
  • It is easier to use since it is not in a tube that gets clogged easily
  • Cheaper in terms of volume
  • Easier to apply than Tamiya's because it is more softer in consistency
  • Green color makes it easier to spot areas that need more sanding
  • Cheaper in terms of volume
I'd use this over branded putty's because of the above reasons. Here's some shots of how I applied it:

Overall I am happy with this putty and judging from the preliminary results this will most probably be my main filler. Special thanks too to my brother who owns the Acrylic Putty I so generously slathered over my kit hehe.
